Things to do

Located on the edge of the southern upland way Polgown Barn is a gateway to a haven for walking, hiking, and cycling. Adjacent to Southern Upland Way Path 504 there is over 200 miles of scenic multi-use paths on your doorstep. You can take in the aesthetic scenery and explore the low hills of Carsphairn and Lowther. The route has many different types of geomorphologies, and a wide variety of land management techniques can be identified along the route. These include sheep farming, wind farms, grouse moorland, cattle farming, natural hardwood forests and commercial forestry.

At Polgown you are on the doorstep of Crawick Multiverse, located north of Sanquhar, an incredible land art installation for all to enjoy the wonders of cosmology, science and art. Savour the beautiful landscape by exploring the pathways which connect the four ecologies of grassland, mountains, water gorges and desert past striking and distinctive landforms, each representing a astronomical and cosmological feature or theory.

Located just 11 miles southeast is the village of Thornhill where you can find an array of shops, traditional Scottish pubs and artisan cafes. Why not treat yourself to an indulgent lunch at Jinty-B’s Cakes and Tearoom, or a glamorous meal out at one of three Michelin starred restaurants in Dumfries, the Auldgirth Inn, or even manifest your inner chocoholic at the Moniaive chocolatiers.

Located just outside the village is the magnificent Drumlanrig Castle which is set on an 80,000 acre estate comprising a country park and Victorian gardens. The castle is considered to be one of the finest examples of late 17th century Renaissance architecture in Scotland, boasts an internationally renowned art collection and is designated by Historic Environment Scotland as a Category A Listed Building.

As early as the 17th century the area was engulfed with mining activity with Leadhills and Wanlockhead famous for lead mining while Sanquhar and Kirkconnel were famous for coal mining.  History enthusiasts can enjoy a day at the Museum of lead mining located 18.8 miles northeast of the property in Wanlockhead, Scotland’s highest village.

For the more adrenaline fueled individuals there are an assortment of mountain biking trails around Drumlanrig Castle and a short 20 minute drive away is the Forest of Ae one of the many venues of the 7stanes mountain bike trails located across the south of Scotland. Alternatively, you can explore the rolling Galloway glens and hills and discover picturesque forest trails, with three friendly visitor centres, distinct wildlife and a colourful history at Galloway Forest Park, located 18 miles west of Polgown Barn.
